The problem continues …

by

I haven’t received any tips about how to handle my squirrels-on-the-bird-feeder problem.

Just this morning, I came across this scene:

I have been known to go to great lengths to provide entertainment for my cats but this is just over the top! I even walked out on the deck to take this picture and the squirrel was no more than a foot and a half away from me! He is getting very daring.

I’m really not sure what kind of products and methods are out there to keep squirrels off my deck. But! Please! Send ideas! And something that might eat squirrels!

    Hey Stacy,

We have the same problem with the tree rats! We hung a sort of “Y” shaped wire from two branches, and put short lengths of PVC pipe on them, with the feeder in the middle. it does have a baffle on the top, but the pipes keep the squirrels from climbing on there. Guess a photo would help, huh?

There are a number of products, but squirrels are tough. There are a few ways to attempt to deal with them. A baffle on the pole will sometimes work. You can also try stringing fishing line between two poles and hanging the feeders from that, being careful how close it hangs to the ground and things the squirrels may leap from.

In addition to whatever squirrel deterrents you attempt, try feeding them. It helps keep their determination down, and dried corn is a lot cheaper than sunflower seeds.
